I was a terrible public speaker and I knew it. I dont think I could even leave a decent phone mail message. It did not seriously affect my life until I opened my own business. I was forced to sell myself and my company in front of small and large groups. It was embarrassing. I joined Toastmasters out of desperation. My first speech was painful. In four minutes and thirty six seconds I said um 46 times, ah 17 times and and 13 times. It was hard to hear back what I put an audience through, but at the same time I was told all the right things I was doing as a speaker. I was surrounded by a supportive group of peers all working towards the same goal of improving their public speaking abilities. It is hard work, but I have made real, measurable progress in my public speaking abilities. Being a better communicator has made a significant difference in my life both personally and professionally. It was an investment I made in myself that has paid back ten fold. I highly recommend going to a meeting and finding out for yourself what Toastmasters is all about and what it can do for you.
